You know which one it is. It has the builder-grade cabinets that came with the house and the fluorescent light you’ve been meaning to replace for three years. It has the floor tile you chose because it was practical, the shelf you added because you needed somewhere to put the detergent, and the walls painted whatever color was left over from something else. It functions. It has always functioned. And that, you’ve told yourself, is enough.

Barrett Cooke would like to respectfully disagree.

Cooke is the principal of Los Angeles architecture and design studio Arterberry Cooke, and this year she was given a laundry room at the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts — one of California’s most celebrated designer showhouses — and decided to treat it like the most important room in the building. There is a version of Wallis Day most people think they know. The actor. The face. The woman who moves through rooms with the kind of ease that looks effortless from the outside and costs considerably more than that.

What most people don’t know — what she is sharing here for the first time — is what it took to become her.

We sat down with Wallis at the beginning of summer, on the eve of something significant. This summer she goes into production on a film with Quentin Tarantino attached as executive producer. Through her production company WLD Productions, she is developing a television show, short films, and an evolving slate of projects that is growing with real intention. Girls Next Door — her podcast and talk show, which she co-hosts with her friend Francesca Allen, now finishing its second season and moving into development on a third, also under WLD — is building its own devoted world. She is, by any measure, in the middle of a creative life that is firing on every cylinder simultaneously.

And she has never been calmer.

“There’s a version of arrival happening in my life right now that’s much bigger than the season changing,” she tells us. “The feeling of stepping into a chapter I’ve quietly been working towards for a long time, as a more whole version of myself.”

The wholeness, it turns out, was hard won.

The light tells her first.

Ask Wallis when summer arrives and she doesn’t give you a date. She gives you a feeling.

“I’m a sunrise and sunset person, always have been,” she says. “There’s a shift around late May where the light starts to linger — the mornings come earlier, the evenings stretch longer, everything softens. That’s when I know.”

It’s a small thing to notice. It’s also the kind of thing you only notice when you’re actually present for your own life — when you’re inside it rather than managing it from above. For a long time, Wallis wasn’t.

She left home at fifteen to begin her career. From that point until very recently, she tells us, she had never properly rested. Not once. She built everything on adrenaline — a career, a public life, a relentless forward momentum that looked, from the outside, like ambition. From the inside it looked like something else entirely.

“The cost comes due eventually,” she says simply.

In 2023 her body forced the reckoning. She ended up in hospital multiple times, septic — her system had been running on stress for so long it had nothing left to fight with. She recovered. She got back to work, because that was what she knew how to do.

Then a long-term relationship ended. She went into autopilot for six months, distracting herself with anything available. And then, at the start of this year, the panic attacks began.

What happened next changed everything.

“The panic attacks led me to a Transcendental Meditation course,” she tells us. “The morning I graduated I woke up with complete clarity. I was leaving what looked, on paper, like a perfect life — but through mindfulness my nervous system had finally regulated enough that I could feel what it had actually been costing me. I hadn’t been able to see it until my body was calm enough to tell me.”

She pauses before she gives us the line that will stay with us long after this conversation ends.

“Your nervous system is the most honest thing about you. It will tell you the truth long before your mind catches up — but only if you give it the quiet to be heard.”

She had been outrunning hers for years. The awakening, she says, was the moment she stopped.

“The promise I made to myself, that I’ll keep for the rest of my life, is that my nervous system comes first. Everything else — the career, the relationships, the choices — flows out of that one promise. Resetting your life is not easy. But the version of yourself you find on the other side is worth every hard day. And every woman deserves to feel that.”

On the other side of that promise is a woman building something entirely her own.

The creative output coming through WLD Productions is staggering — but what’s more striking than the volume is the quality of energy behind it. This isn’t the productivity of someone running from something. It’s the productivity of someone who has finally arrived somewhere.

“Liberating, terrifying, and the most aligned I’ve ever felt,” she says of making things entirely on her own terms. “The empty promises, the being told to stick to one thing — it got to me. So I started making things from the ground up, and it’s a completely different muscle. You stop asking permission. You realize nobody’s coming to choose you, you have to choose yourself. Once you understand that, you can’t really go back.”

She talks about creative flow with the precision of someone who has studied it — because she has.

“Time disappears. I’ll sit down to write at ten in the morning and look up and it’s four in the afternoon and I haven’t eaten or moved. There’s a feeling almost like being slightly outside of yourself — the work is coming through you rather than from you.” She was diagnosed with ADHD, she tells us — her default state is twelve tabs open simultaneously. Flow is the only time those tabs close. “It’s the closest thing I’ve found to meditation in motion.”

The things she’s proudest of right now, she tells us, aren’t things you can hang on a wall.

“The projects I’m developing. Girls Next Door, which Fran and I have built together. The screenplay I’ve been working on. Those feel like the most honest acquisitions of this chapter — the projects, not the objects.”

And then, almost as an exhale after everything that came before — summer.

Summer, for Wallis, looks like this:

A long wooden table outside, somewhere on the Italian or French coast. Late afternoon, the sun doing that golden thing it does over water. Handmade pasta with tomatoes that actually taste of tomatoes, warm olive bread, olive oil someone’s grandmother pressed. The people around her laughing properly. No phones. Nobody trying to capture it.

“Just the moment,” she says.

She eats outside without thinking about it now. Long lunches that turn into afternoons. Walking her two Shiba Inus — Arlo, six, and Gia, one — barefoot in the garden first thing in the morning.

“There’s a permission to slow down that only summer gives you — even the most ambitious people I know loosen their grip between June and August. I love that.”

Her ideal slow day begins with waking naturally with the light. Meditation. A long walk with the dogs through the British countryside. A proper breakfast she actually sits down for. A few hours of writing when her mind is clearest. A swim somewhere — sea, river or pool, she’s not particular. A long lunch outside with friends, the kind where you lose track of time. An afternoon of reading or gardening or nothing in particular. Cooking dinner with the people she loves, watching the sunset, board games, good music. A film. Asleep before midnight.

“That’s it. That’s the whole thing.”

When we ask her what a beautiful life means — right now, in this season — she doesn’t reach for anything grand.

“A regulated nervous system. People I love who love me back honestly. Work I’m proud of that doesn’t cost me my health to do. Mornings I’m awake for. Dogs at my feet. A family I can come home to. The freedom to say no, and the courage to say yes.”

She smiles.

“None of it looks like what I thought a beautiful life would look like ten years ago, and all of it is better.”

There is a chair I have been thinking about buying for three years. Not because I can’t afford it. Because buying it feels like a decision I want to get exactly right.

That’s not how most of us are taught to think about furniture. We treat it like paint colors or throw pillows — something to update when the trend turns. We budget for it as though it’s temporary. And then we wonder why our homes never quite feel like they belong to us.

Furniture is not decoration. It is autobiography. What you choose to live with is a direct reflection of your values, your taste, and the kind of life you are actively choosing to build. It is, when you buy well, one of the most meaningful investments you will ever make — not just monetarily, though that argument is real. But as a contribution to your home’s story. This is what I kept coming back to when I first encountered The Sentimentalist — the new collection from Olive Ateliers, developed with Pamela Anderson, launching this week. This is not a celebrity licensing story. Anderson has spent decades living in a way most of us only aspire to, on a property in Vancouver she bought from her grandparents over thirty years ago and has been quietly restoring ever since. She wakes at four in the morning to walk her land with a basket in hand, gathering broken daffodils the way her grandmother taught her — nothing wasted, everything given a second chance. That line stopped me. Because it’s exactly the standard I’ve tried to hold every piece in my own home to — and rarely said out loud quite so plainly.

The best furniture does become part of your rituals. The table you gather at every morning. The chair that holds the particular light of a particular hour. These are not objects you replace when the algorithm tells you to. They are objects you grow into, that grow more themselves the longer you live with them. Rattan, teak, stone — materials that age honestly rather than simply expire — are not compromises. They are the point.

I’ve spent a significant part of my life helping clients make furniture decisions, and the ones who get it right are almost always the ones who select with intention. Who resist the trend cycle. Who are willing to save for the piece rather than settle for something adequate. The “good enough for now” piece has a way of being there forever — which is its own tragedy.

Every season we choose objects and study them properly — not as trend pieces, not as roundups, but as a genuine attempt to understand why something has lasted and why it matters. To kick off spring we are looking at the terracotta pot, which I’ll admit I came to slightly reluctantly. It felt almost too obvious. But the more time I spent with it — reading about it, handling good examples, thinking about what makes one pot worth $48 and another worth $400 — the more interesting it became. There is a real argument here about what we buy, why we buy it, and what it means to own something that was made the same way eight thousand years ago. I think you’ll find it worth reading to the end.

The Terracotta Pot

There is an object in your garden — or there ought to be — that has not changed since before writing was invented. We think you should own a very good one.

ORIGIN

Here is a thing worth considering as the season turns: the object you reach for when the first seedlings are ready — that plain, rough-walled, rust-colored pot — is functionally identical to one your counterpart in Anatolia would have reached for eight thousand years ago. Not similar. Identical. The same taper, the same rolled lip, the same small hole at the base.

The name comes to us from Italian — terra cotta, baked earth — though the material predates the language by several millennia. Fired clay vessels have been excavated from Neolithic settlements across the Middle East, their profiles uncannily close to what you would find on the shelves of a good garden center today. The Greeks sent oil and wine around the Mediterranean in terracotta amphorae. Roman engineers built it into aqueducts and civic facades. It was not chosen because it was beautiful, though it is. It was chosen because it worked, and kept working, and continues to work now.

Its horticultural life deepened through the enclosed gardens of medieval monasteries and reached a cultural apex in the great walled kitchen gardens of the Georgian and Victorian eras — long glasshouse shelves lined with hundreds of hand-thrown pots, each fractionally different from the last. By the time Queen Victoria died, the terracotta pot was so commonplace as to be invisible. We have spent the last century learning to notice it again.

FORM

The classic terracotta pot — wider at the lip than the base, rolling inward to a narrow foot, with a single drainage hole — is one of the most completely resolved designs in the history of made objects. Every element earns its place. The taper allows roots to slide free at repotting without tearing. The rolled rim is both structural and ergonomic. The hole at the base is non-negotiable. Remove any one of these features and the thing stops working. Add anything, and you introduce a problem the original form had already solved by ignoring.

We are surrounded by objects in perpetual revision — phones remade annually, furniture restyled each season. The terracotta pot has looked the same since before the wheel was invented to throw it on. Its proportions were not designed by a single intelligence but arrived at collaboratively, across centuries, by the accumulated corrections of people who grew things and noticed what worked. That is a different kind of authority than the design studio’s. And in our view, a more durable one.

THE CASE FOR TERRACOTTA

Let us be direct. The garden center contains many vessels that will hold a plant. Plastic, fiberglass, powder-coated metal, glazed ceramic in every shade from sage to slate. Most are functional. A few are genuinely attractive. None of them breathe — and breathing, in a container for a living root system, turns out to matter enormously.

The porosity of an unglazed terracotta wall means surplus moisture is wicked outward and evaporated continuously from the surface. For the roots inside, this approximates what they evolved for: soil that drains freely, dries between waterings, never becomes the stagnant environment that kills more container plants than any pest or disease. Rosemary does not die from neglect. It dies from drowning. Put it in terracotta and you have to work considerably harder to drown it.

There is also what the pot does over time. Plastic ages embarrassingly — fading, cracking, developing a grey that is not patina but simply degradation. Terracotta ages beautifully. The white mineral efflorescence that develops on the outside is calcium drawn through the clay by evaporation. It is evidence of use. It cannot be bought or manufactured. It has to be earned, one season at a time.

SPRING

There is a specific quality to April light unlike any other month’s. It comes in low, raking across surfaces, making texture suddenly visible. A terracotta pot in April light — one that has spent a winter outside, absorbed rain, dried repeatedly, begun to develop its mineral surface — is a genuinely beautiful object. The color shifts as you move around it. In that low spring light, you can see all of this at once.

April is also when the garden makes its annual demands. The seedlings started indoors in February — sweet peas leggy on the windowsill, dahlia tubers beginning to shoot — need to move on. The rosemary that wintered in a small pot needs a larger one. The lemon tree, brought inside in October, is pushing new growth and wants fresh compost. These are the rituals that mark the turning of the year, and they are done properly with a proper pot. Not a plastic tray. A pot that was made for exactly this, by someone who has been making them for decades, from clay that has been doing this work for centuries.

Buy well, this spring. Two or three pots chosen with care will give more satisfaction than a dozen bought thoughtlessly. These are objects that will be in your garden long after the plants they hold have been replaced several times over.

LIVING WELL WITH TERRACOTTA — FOUR THINGS TO KNOW

Before planting — Soak new pots in water for at least an hour. New terracotta is very dry and will pull moisture aggressively from fresh compost — saturating the clay first means the pot hydrates from rainfall rather than immediately from your plant’s roots.

The right plants — Terracotta suits plants that prefer to dry out between waterings: rosemary, thyme, sage, citrus, olives, agapanthus, pelargoniums, succulents. Water-hungry plants need more frequent attention or a glazed alternative.

Winter — In hard-frost climates, empty pots and store undercover, or raise them on feet so water doesn’t pool at the base. High-fired and Impruneta pots are significantly more resistant, but no unglazed pot should be left saturated through a freeze.

Buying well — Tap a pot — a good one rings rather than thuds, indicating dense, well-fired clay. The color should be consistent through any chips. Uneven lips are not a flaw; they are the mark of a hand-thrown pot.

Designing with light is not about adding lamps or choosing brighter fixtures. It begins with understanding how light already moves through your space — and making decisions that work with it rather than against it. Each season, I build a mood board for The House.

It is less an exercise in styling and more an act of noticing. Certain colors begin to repeat. Materials reappear across entirely different contexts — fashion, ceramics, food, interiors — sharing a quiet visual language that I couldn’t have predicted at the start. The board becomes a kind of diary of what the season is actually asking for, as opposed to what we’ve been told it should look like.

This Spring, a single word kept surfacing as I looked back at what I’d saved.

Interruption.

Not disruption — nothing dramatic. Just small, deliberate breaks in what might otherwise be a too-composed picture. A glaze that refuses to behave uniformly. A bow placed where one doesn’t quite belong. A plate arranged with the same care as a room or space. An outdoor chair pulled into a corner that has quietly, without announcement, become worth sitting in again.

I want to spend some time here unpacking what these images are actually saying — and more importantly, what they might be asking us to do.

On the difference between freshness and revelation

Spring is perpetually described as the season of freshness. It is technically correct and aesthetically a little lazy. Freshness implies replacement: new things in, old things out, the seasonal edit. Start fresh.

But the mood board told a different story this year. Almost nothing in it was new. The colors were grounded rather than bright. The materials looked lived-in. There was no urgency — only a quiet shift in how familiar things were being seen.

This is what I mean by revelation over freshness. It’s a meaningful distinction for how we approach the season, both in our spaces and in the way we dress and cook and arrange our days.

A practice to try: Before you buy anything new this season, spend fifteen minutes walking through your home as if you’re seeing it for the first time. Not to edit — just to notice. What catches your eye? What have you stopped seeing entirely? What would a stranger find interesting that you no longer register? The audit is the beginning.

On the subtle power of interruption

The most compelling images on this board shared a particular quality: each one contained a single element that slightly contradicted everything around it. A matte surface beside gloss. An organic, imperfect form inside a structured composition. One unexpected color in an otherwise tonal palette.

This is not an accident of taste. It is a principle.

Compositions that are too harmonious tend to be invisible. The eye moves through them without stopping. But introduce one considered deviation — one thing that doesn’t quite belong — and suddenly the whole picture becomes interesting. The eye has to work slightly harder, and in doing so, it notices more.

Spring is a particularly forgiving season for this kind of experiment. The return of light means nuance reads more clearly. Small decisions carry further. A single stem in a vessel can do the work that a full arrangement couldn’t.

A practice to try: Look at a corner of your home that feels complete and ask: what would I add that doesn’t quite belong here? Not something jarring — something that gently contradicts. A rough-textured object in a smooth, refined space. A dark ceramic on a pale shelf. Introduce one thing and live with it for a week. Notice how your eye adjusts.

On recomposition — the more interesting kind of refresh

The seasonal instinct to refresh is familiar. It usually involves buying something. A new cushion, a new print, a new plant in a pot that looks exactly like the last one.

I’ve found considerably more satisfaction — and considerably more surprise — in doing the opposite.

The mood board this season reinforced something I’ve come to believe about objects: they rarely lose their value. They lose their context. A vessel moved across the room is, for all practical purposes, a different object. A textile reintroduced into a space it hasn’t been in for six months shifts the entire balance of a palette. A chair pulled outside into the first warmth of the year transforms how both the chair and the garden feel.

Recomposition is not about making do. It is about recognizing that most things haven’t been fully seen yet.

A practice to try: Choose three objects in your home that you have stopped noticing. Remove them entirely for 48 hours. Then reintroduce them one at a time — but not where they were before. Let them audition for a new role. What changes? What, if anything, should stay in its new place?

On light as a material

One of the quieter revelations of the mood board was how consistently light functioned as a design element in its own right — not as backdrop, but as participant.

The outdoor corner that suddenly earns its place does so because of where the afternoon sun now falls. The glaze on a ceramic that seemed ordinary in January reads entirely differently in March. The linen curtain that was closed all winter, pulled back and allowing in a longer, more oblique light, changes the character of a room.

We talk about light abstractly — “good light,” “bad light” — but what the season offers is an opportunity to map it specifically. To notice where it falls at different times of day, how it changes the surfaces it touches, which corners it has now reached that it couldn’t in December.

A practice to try: On a clear day this week, spend an hour in the room you live in most. Observe where the light falls at morning, at midday, and in the late afternoon. Move one object into the light. Move one out of it. This is not interior design — it is seasonal attunement.
